Macroeconomic assessment food security in Lithuania
In order to assess the food security there are a lot of different methodologies, their choice depends on the purpose of analysis, data access and other factors. Aim of the research – to determine the situation of food supply. Research methods: review of Lithuanian and foreign scientific literature, grouping, systematization, comparative analysis, statistical analysis. Macroeconomic indicators that are analyzed on the basis of food availability, accessibility and consumption dimensions were selected for food security analysis in Lithuania. In order to assess food security at the level of macro-economic these indicators are examined below: GDP per capita; consumer and food price indices; food consumption per capita; agricultural balance. GDP per capita during the period had an upward trend (with the exception of the economic crisis in years), reflecting the increasing level of development and increasing food security at the national level. Increasing GDP, inflation grew inevitably and fluctuated sharply over the period. The results suggest that in the period of 2002–2011, the main food security issues were lack of availability of food options, which led to reduction in personal income, the rising cost of food and soft drinks.
