Rezekne Higher Education institution
In Latvia there are a large number of studies in the sphere of culture including assessment of the significance of the sphere of culture for national economy and research on the availability of culture. However, issues of the availability of culture and leisure time spending issues of specific cities have been investigated insufficiently. The aim of the study is to assess the cultural activities and leisure time spending opportunities for residents of Daugavpils as influencing factors for attractiveness of the city. Research provides analysis of cultural activities and leisure time spending opportunities of the residents of Daugavpils city, on the basis of information provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and Daugavpils City Culture Council, as well as the results of questionnaries of the residents of Daugavpils. The investigation has used general scientific research methods: information analysis and synthesis, logical and constructive, data grouping and graphics illustration methods. The results of the research are indicative that development of the sphere of culture in Daugavpils has been addressed only as a part of urban environment within total development program of the city of Daugavpils, but for Daugavpils elaboration of individual cultural industry development planning documents would be required, whereunder a coordinated development of the sphere of culture in the city of Daugavpils would be planned. Research also showed that, in general, residents of Daugavpils are satisfied with cultural activities arranged in the city for certain population groups, as well as with leisure time spending opportunities in the city.
