Problematic aspects of implementation of sustainable development principle

Abstract

Sustainable development process and competitiveness of the area are ensured by environmental compliance in human economic activity. Environment and its resources are no longer perceived as an inexhaustible source of material benefit, but as a local development objective, which should be promoted for the economic well-being, and thus a better quality of life. Based on international and national legislation, scientific researches and other sources, it is being analysed the implementation of the principle of sustainable development. The aim of research - to identify problem areas of implementation of the principle of sustainable development. The results revealed that sustainable development is a priority development objective in Lithuania, and local governmental authorities are one of the most important institutions in addressing environmental problems. However, the local government level are facing problems such as the narrow functions of local municipalities, lack of initiative for citizens and the public interest to participate in solving environmental problems, lack of financial resources, lack of culture of local municipal, organizations orientations of the long-term prospects, lack of coherence etc. Applied research methods – a systematic literature analysis, comparison, content, logical and comparative analysis and method of abstraction.
