Tourism governance principles and functions at the local level

Abstract

Tourism sector growth within the global tourism market determines tourism as a priority area at the local level. Due to the increasing tourism demand local tourism government promotes tourism as a sector that creates new jobs, stimulates business development and increases tourism income. The aim of the research is to identify tourism governance principles and functions at the local level. This article analyzes the principles and challenges of tourism governance at the local level. There were used such methods as scientific literature analysis, documents analysis and synthesis, expert evaluation. The analysis of legislation and evaluation of local experts showed that national and local tourism priorities are different. There is positive economic impact of tourism development in Lithuanian municipalities. Major tourism development goals at the local level related to the tourism infrastructure development, tourism marketing activities and improvement of tourism services quality.
